Deep Gap FD

Yesterday we continued on with "safety month" by studying about and going to the Fire Department. The firemen at Deep Gap Volunteer Fire Department graciously agreed to show us around the joint and teach us about fire safety. It was really interesting to learn that most of what these guys (and gals) do is more in the "rescue" vein from car wrecks, etc. Along with their firefighting training (which is pretty extensive) almost all are EMT's and they will have 5 paramedics on their squad come next year. They are in their "busier season" as everyone is lighting up the fireplaces and wood stoves around here. FYI: make sure to check for leaves on your chimney before getting the fireplace going. That tidbit was for free. :)

We got to see all the different kinds of trucks they have. First one was the Brush Truck that is specifically used for brush fires. Then, onto the Rescue Truck that they use for fires but more for wrecks, etc. Here is Charlton showing us some of their equipment. We then got to see the big Fire Truck. Talk about some gear! We even got to see the lights and siren as well as sit in the cab. Well, some of the kids did and some elected to stay on the ground. :)
Drew showed us the equipment and what a firefighter looks like with the mask on so we wouldn't be scared should we see one at some point (hopefully not). I tell you what, these guys are in great physical shape to be able to carry all this stuff!

Our trusty Deep Gap VFD firemen Drew, David, and Charlton. They gave every child a hat, coloring book, pencil, and sticker to take home so we can get our rescue plan together and practice it. They even let us eat our picnic lunch in their break room as it was cold and rainy.
