Not this past Saturday but the Saturday before Drew and Dustin went deer hunting. Drew was really hoping to get three deer this year so that we would have plenty of meat in our freezer to last us until next Fall. He got a really nice doe last year that provided 80 pounds of meat and we have already eaten it. The children and I were eating down with Daphne and her girls when my phone rang. As I was commenting to Daph that I hoped it was Drew saying he had gotten a deer Drew said on the other line, "I hope you like deer meat." I as so excited and proud and let me tell you why:We do eat meat although it is in some moderation and try our best to eat meat without hormones and antibiotics. Drew is an excellent hunter and our family is quite blessed by this. I mean, my husband can not only provide for us by having a "real world job" but he can provide by doing something you don't learn in college. Before I go any further, I want all reading to know that while Drew is a hunter he does not nor has he ever hunted just for sport. Everything he has ever hunted has been with the express purpose of using the meat for food not just to mount something on the wall. When he hunts he takes great care to make sure that any doe he has his sights set on is not a nursing mother. We love to watch the deer around our house and elsewhere and marvel at their beauty but we have also taught our children that hunting deer, etc is one way that God uses to provide food for us. It is a wonderful balance that we are actively teaching in our home.
I am so grateful that my husband is willing to go sit up in a tree in cold weather so that he can provide for us. Grateful and proud!
